‘What’s My Line’ - Chemistry Event

Kent and Medway STEM in collaboration with Royal Society of Chemistry ChemNet, organised ‘What’s My line? ‘Chemistry Event’ at Discovery Park, Sandwich on the 23rd of October for A level students in Kent and Medway area with particular interest in Chemistry. 

This event was aimed at KS5 - 4  to 5 students to give them an insight into a variety of chemistry careers which have Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths at their heart. It was based on the old TV quiz show “What’s my Line” and involved the students questioning STEM Ambassadors about their careers and their current role in an attempt to guess their job title.

Eleven Ambassadors all with a chemistry background brought three “props” or tools of their trade with them which was displayed on the table in front of them and prompted a short discussion directly with the students in order to discuss different aspects of their jobs.

The event was run as a competition, so at the end of their 10 minutes questioning time the students complete a guess sheet, writing down what they thought the Ambassador’s job title is. They then moved on to the next table. At the end of the session the STEM Ambassadors revealed their job role to all of the students and the winning group was given a small prize.

The schools involved were Harvey Grammar, Borden Grammar, Ursuline College and Charles Dickens School bringing upto 10 A level students. The event lasted 2 hours, very successful, both teachers and students provided us with amazing feedback.

  • 'From this activity I have gained an insight into different fields of science and what I might be interested in'
  • 'I think this activity should happen more because it will open people’s eyes on the vast scale of jobs in chemistry and how the other sciences are useful in chemistry'

Teachers said:

  • 'Very well organised and informative. There were lot of opportunities for discussion, think careers and it kept all students engaged'
