Students had an exhilarating morning of Science and Math activities Throughout January 2017, Spires Academy, The Abbey School, The North School, Rainham School for Girls, Invicta Grammar School, The Thomas Aveling School, Hartsdown Academy, Fortpitt Grammar School, Folkestone Academy, Greenacre Academy and Chatham and Clarendon School all had a two hours of free enrichment and enhancement activities run by Kent & Medway STEM Ambassadors using innovative ways with a carousel of activities to promote STEM.

18 STEM Ambassador’s visited each school for two one hour sessions facilitating up to 160 Year 7 and 8 students. The activities were in different themes:

  • The League of Super Humans – science based activities related to human performance
  • Astronaut Academy – astronaut selection activities based on maths and science
  • Pirates of the Caribbean – using problem solving to find hidden treasure
  • Harry Potter and the Pixie Problem – tasks to capture pixies and find a culprit!
  • The Time Lords – journey to the ancient world to save the Tardis
  • Disaster! – saving the planet using mathematics!

In the astronaut workshop, the “NASA team” carried out some simple chemistry to test “rocket fuels”, some rounding number exercises to help design their rocket and building their own model lunar modules out of marshmallow and sticks of pasta.

In the legal superhuman activity, students carried out 10 different activities, mostly based on maths. Decoding messages, calculating the quickest route through a maze and identifying mystery objects from their smell or from the sound they make.

It was a fun morning filled with lots of activities which aroused the year 7’s interest and got all of them engaged.

The pupil’s feedback has been overwhelmingly positive:

  • “This has been a very fun lesson and I have really enjoyed this, it has made science really fun for me and enjoyable, I would like to do this again, it has been very fun”.
  • “Today I worked with a STEM Ambassador and, I learnt I could more stuff than I knew I could”
  • “Today was fun and I wish we could our work like this every day, I would not change anything”
  • “I liked how we had to do different puzzles to get code pieces, it made us think.”
