Forensic Science Day: Students Investigate the crime scene and solve the death of woman

 December 02 2015 | Kent & Medway | Views: 1534

STEM Ambassadors from the School of Law, Criminal Justice and Computing at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) created a set of workshops so that students could try and work out what had happened to ‘Kristen Stewart’ the 15 year old mysteriously found dead in her bedroom.

Teams from six Kent secondary schools (Fulston Manor, Castle Community College, Sittingbourne Community College, Archbishop’s School, St Anselms Catholic School and Maidstone Grammar School for Girls) took part in the challenge, learning about different types of blood stains, how to find which pen had been used to write the ‘suicide’ note, and how to find fingerprints and match them. Finally, they viewed the ‘crime scene’ and worked out what they would take to the forensic lab and study further.

By investigating the evidence the truth became clear – aspects about the death and the suspects pointed in one direction….

It was a fascinating day and a great opportunity for the students to find out about careers in Forensic Science and where to study for it.

Student comments:

  • “I found the forensic biology most useful”
  • “I could find how to solve a crime scene”

Teacher comments:

  • “Well worthwhile event”
