World Space Week 2022 follows the theme of Space and Sustainability, looking at how space science and technology, can benefit society, contributing to sustainable development on earth. It also allows exploration of the challenges in keeping the space environment safe, through sustainable space activity.
At The STEM Hub SE, we are organising a number of space related activities for Space Week, suitable for primary and secondary schools to get involved with. This includes everything from live talks on space sustainability and space industry careers, to hands on rocket building challenges in schools.
Below is a run down of all the events happening and space related resources available, to engage school aged children and young people in the STEM of space.
Secondary School Talk: Our First Insights from the James Webb Telescope
Join STEM Ambassador Dr. Stephen Wilkins, a Reader in Astronomy (equivalent to Associate Professor) in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) at the University of Sussex for a Live Talk on the first day of World Space Week, an international celebration of science and technology. Stephen will introduce NASA’S James Webb Space Telescope in all its glory and tell you about some of its early results alongside the contributions of UK scientists and engineers to the project. You will also hear about Stephen’s own career path and the routes he took to get there!
Primary School Talk: Space Junk? Why Should we Care?
Join STEM Ambassador Katherine Courtney, a former Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, Chair of the Global Network on Sustainability in Space, and Founder of Primary Space to talk to you about why she cares so much about space and why we should all care about protecting the space environment!
We are organising a Big Bang at School Event at Moon Hall School for dyslexic students on the 10th October, supported by Engineering UK. Students will be part of an inspiring STEM filled day, with amazing space related science and engineering activities, to help them get creative and find their flair for STEM. These activities include planetarium shows, talks and practical activities on the solar system given by the University of Surrey, along with designing and making moon buggies, rockets and other IT space related activities.
