Hazel, a schoolgirl, helped win the battle of Britain! Her father thought that the spitfires should hold 8 guns, rather than the 4 initially planned. However, he could not work it out on his own and asked his 13-year old daughter to help him with the calculations.
Hazel was already a talented mathematician, and although many people thought that 8 guns would weigh down the spitfire planes, Hazel contributed to this project.
Many people believe that Hazel’s contribution gave Britain the firepower to help them win the war. Her work has been recognised by the RAF, and her granddaughter Felicity discussed her amazing work. What an inspiration to STEM professionals today!
