The CanSat competition provides students with an exciting opportunity of practical experience, working on a small-scale space project.
The task is to design and build a working satellite using the volume and shape of a soft drinks can. The challenge comes from working out how to fit the different main subsystems of a satellite, such as power and a communication system into this small space.
The CanSats are then launched into space on small rockets, at launch events across the UK. While in space, the CanSats gather data collected by the team, before coming down to earth, using parachutes also designed by the students.
This competition is open to teams of 4-6 students based in UK schools and colleges. Students must be over the age of 14 at the start of the competition.
Each team will be provided with a basic CanSat kit, along with access to free online resources, to help in the planning and design of their projects.
Teams can also request a STEM ambassador to help with the design and build.
The project runs from Oct 2022 to April 2023 with registrations now open.
