Park Community School, a coeducational secondary school in Havant, Hampshire, enthusiastically brought STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) to life for its students as part of Engineering UK's Big Bang at Schools programme.
On 2 April, Year 8 students took part in a vibrant science fair, where groups planned and conducted their own investigations, carried out experiments, and presented their findings on display boards. Parents, carers and staff were invited to attend, and students confidently explained their research and performed demonstrations throughout the day. Around 190 students participated, and the event welcomed over 90 parent and carer visitors, making it a great success.
Year 7 students were also busy with a Space-themed project, exploring various aspects of space and creating models and displays. Their work was presented during a whole-school assembly and showcased after school. Working in groups, the students developed independent learning skills and linked their STEM work cross-curricularly with Art and Design.
Prizes were awarded to both year groups across three categories: Best Presented, Most Original, and Best Overall.
This rewarding programme, aimed at young people aged 11–14, made a lasting impact and the school hopes to take part again next year.
