Exploring STEM at Dartford Science and Technology College

Dartford Science and Technology College (DSTC) is a non-selective girls' secondary school in Dartford, Kent, with a focus on science and technology. Part of the Co‑operative Trust, it values democracy, equality, and self-responsibility, offering both academic and vocational pathways in a supportive community.

The school was delighted to be supported by The STEM Hub as part of Engineering UK’s Big Bang at Schools programme, which aims to inspire young people aged 11–14 to explore the exciting world of science, technology, engineering, and maths.

DSTC hosted its annual STEM Activity Days for 450 students from Years 7–9. Over two exciting days in July (16/17), students stepped off-timetable to experience a wide range of science, technology, engineering and maths challenges.

The event opened with Artic, a Dartford-based facilities management company, introducing students to careers in construction and sustainable engineering. They also showcased their RAF racing motorbike and sidecar, giving students a hands-on look at the physics of high-speed racing. Staff said:“This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to learn about a local company and all of the different careers. They highlighted the need to be more sustainable, which is what many of the school’s students feel passionately about.”  Poppy (Y9) shared: “I loved being in the sidecar but it was hard to lean over and grab the handle, so I imagine you have to be strong when it’s going really fast,” while Anika said: “It has made me consider a career in construction. I like the idea of working in a hospital and keeping it running for operations and making it safe for everyone.”

An Elite Skills Session run by the Army tested teamwork, leadership, and resilience through physical problem-solving challenges.  Staff reported: “Many of the activities were challenging but very doable and the students enjoyed these and they liked working as a team and said they enjoyed being outside learning new skills.”

Creativity came to the fore with jewellery-making workshops, where students designed their own pieces, and a school-wide treasure hunt, which included fun tasks like ‘dance in the canteen and record it’ and ‘find a bug & take a selfie with it,’ testing observation, teamwork and quick thinking.

A recycled fashion show showcased innovation as teams turned trash into trend, modelling their designs on the catwalk while promoting sustainability. Students also engaged in a Balfour Beatty workshop, gaining insight into engineering and construction careers through design challenges. Staff said: “Balfour Beatty was really enjoyable, the girls presenting were strong.”

Throughout the event, problem-solving activities encouraged students to work together, think creatively and build resilience. The two STEM Days left students inspired, developing skills vital for future careers and reinforcing the values of innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.
