Woodlands Community College, located in Southampton, is a mixed comprehensive secondary school serving students aged 11 to 16 years. As a foundation school, it operates under the Reach Cooperative Trust within the Southampton Education Authority and was delighted to receive support from Engineering UK's Big Bang at Schools programme.
From 11-14 March, Woodlands Community College launched its Big Bang Events with an exciting science celebration. Throughout the week, science teachers engaged students with thrilling demonstrations in the theatre and on the field, drawing enthusiastic crowds eager to witness science in action.
The demonstrations included a range of spectacular experiments such as Elephant’s Toothpaste, Coke and Mentos reactions, the Van de Graaff generator, Dancing Salt Flames, the Whoosh Bottle, and Vinegar and Sodium Carbonate Rockets. These interactive displays not only entertained but also educated students on important scientific principles in a fun and engaging way.
Thursday 13, marked the launch of the Element Hunt, a fun competition where staff dressed as their favourite chemical elements. Students eagerly searched for them, and those who found all the elements won prizes, adding a competitive and educational twist.
Also on Thursday 12, the week's highlight was The Great British Science Fair. Students in Years 7 to 9 identified real-world problems, researched solutions and presented their findings at the day's culminating fair. Years 8 and 10 visited, engaging with participants, learning about projects, and selecting standout entries. Winning teams received vouchers for their outstanding work.
The event showcased fantastic entries, with students displaying great enthusiasm and creativity throughout. The Big Bang Events were a resounding success, and we look forward to hosting another Science Fair next year to continue inspiring our students in the field of science.
