Celebrating the Engineering and Technology part of the EngiTech virtual event, schools had the opportunity to take part in an event where pupils could build their own torch and problem solve while working alongside an engineer who is a STEM Ambassador, IET Education Officer and Lecturer in Computer Systems at Canterbury Christ Church University.

We had 16 primary schools taking part with the majority of them located in Kent and Essex, however as virtual events enable location not to be a barrier, we even had schools join us from Bristol and Leicester. Teachers undertook training in preparation to support on the day and especially as this was a virtual event, all schools who took part were provided with full kit provided by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

On the day of the event the pupils learned about light and motion, energy and the skills needed for a future career in Engineering. During the live make-along virtual event, we had over 600 torches being made. At the end of the session the children had the opportunity to ask questions and come up with ideas to improve the torch.

We have had overwhelming positive feedback from the schools including:

• “This event was very successful and helped us to embed the national curriculum on the electricity module. The children responded very well to the activity and I think this should be made into an annual event because it works and November is a good time for it”
