Case Study - #thisgirlcan Maths Event at Swingate Primary School

 May 15 2017 | Kent & Medway | Views: 1987

The #thisgirlcan Maths event was to inspire and to encourage the female students from year 3 & 4 to be more aspirational and confident about maths. Swingate Primary School held the same event last year which Kent & Medway STEM helped to support and this was described as “very successful”. Kent & Medway STEM contacted numerous female STEM Ambassadors who lived locally to help the school really inspire the girls with their own experience with maths.

On Monday 15th of May 2017, 90 year 3-4 girls and 40 parents gathered in the main hall of the school. It was explained by school teacher Mrs Clarke to the parents that boys were outperforming girls in mathematics for the years 4 to 6. There were secondary school students from Fort Pitt Grammar school who were present. They discussed their attitudes to maths and explained how they gained more confidence in the subject. The three STEM Ambassadors who attended the event gave a talk each to the gathering of girls and parents. Mrs Clarke of Swingate primary school commented “the STEM representatives each shared their maths journeys and how Maths supports their careers etc. This helped to motivate and inspire the younger girls and inform parents about the importance of Maths.”

The school was very thankful for the experience, Mrs Clarke also commented the following “Thank you so much to Chantelle, Katrina and Karen for coming and being willing to share their lives / experiences with our pupils. It was an outstanding afternoon. We hope to do it again next year”. This not only shows the fantastic support STEM Ambassadors provide to students but also a longer-impact with a request for the event to be held again the following year.
