Skittle Chromatography & The Perfect Cup of Tea

 February 10 2015 | Kent & Medway | Views: 1707

Kick-starting activities for British Science Week (BSW) with tea and Skittles.

STEM Teachers and Ambassadors met on Tuesday 10 February for a BSW activity training event in Canterbury organised by Kent & Medway STEM.
The session started with a selection of liquids and plenty of tea bags which were experimented with to see the range of reaction times and effects. The activity was based on the British Science Association’s downloadable resource ‘The perfect cup of tea’

The group were then mesmerised by Skittle chromatography, they placed sweets in different arrangements on petri dishes with water and watched as the dye dissolved in colourful patterns. This was topped off by the surprise of seeing the white ‘S’s floating to the surface after a period of time.

To end the session teachers and ambassadors exchanged contact information so that they could plan an activity in schools. Teachers were invited to bring their students to upcoming Kent & Medway STEM events including the Forensic Science Days at Canterbury Christ Church University and The Big Bang Fair @ Discovery Park. Everyone was given a printed copy of some more activities from the British Science Association which you can download for free by visiting: http://britishscienceweek.org/plan/activity-packs/
