Invicta Grammar School in Maidstone invited Kent & Medway STEM Ambassadors into their school at the beginning of February to help students obtain their STEM Leaders Awards. The school requested a range of professionals, who work within the field of STEM, to come into the school to give a short talk to the whole group on their role and then to answer further questions during an interview session. At Invicta Grammar School it was the year 11 students who were working towards the STEM Leaders Award and being an all-girls school they particularly wanted to boost the profile of females working in the STEM careers sector. Kent & Medway STEM ambassadors who attended included a food engineer, a plant optimisation engineer, a pharmaceutical industry expert, a machine tools & wind turbine control systems production engineer, a railway engineer and an academic who teaches civil engineering construction, management and highway engineering at Greenwich University.
The Leaders Award for STEM is a Primary Engineer programme open to all between the ages of 5 and 19 years. It is a fantastic way to increase young people's awareness of the breadth of opportunities open to them within the STEM subjects. The award helps to develop vital literacy and communication skills and give the students a chance to open their aspirations by speaking directly with professionals from different fields in STEM. Each year students can re-apply with a new updated letter of application and a new round of interviews. The best articles will be published on the website and circulated to the organisations that support the aims of the project and the wider press.
