STEM At Work

A record number of schools attended STEM at Work 2018. Fourteen secondary schools from the Kent and Medway Region attended the annual full day event, at the Canterbury campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. There was a total of sixteen workshops available to the students, run by local STEM employers and STEM Ambassadors.

All groups enjoyed an hour long exciting talk with Dr Robert Barker, of the University of Kent. He demonstrated how exciting science can be with real life examples, including understanding investigations with BBC Terrific Scientific to help inform research into whether feet are adapting and the way people walk changes in response, to the urban terrain in which many people live now! - ‘it was information packed and interesting’

The specialisms and interactive workshops the other STEM Ambassadors shared with the students ranged from:

  • An Introduction to Intensive Horticulture with A Pearson Growers - ‘it was very nice and informative and fun’
  • Bridge design and construction with The Royal Engineers Museum, Library & Archive ‘it was great, we got to build things’
  • Crustal construction with Pfizer – ‘it was very engaging and allowed us to think’
  • Engineering efficient water works with South East Water – ‘ it was excellent, I learnt all about the water, and how it works’
  • Exploring electricity with EDF Energy – ‘it was fun doing all the practical’s
  • How to restart a heart with Canterbury Chris Church University, Faculty of Health and Wellbeing – ‘very helpful, I am now aware of how to do CPR’
  • Investigating fire with Prometheus Forensic Services - ‘Very good – I learnt how easily a fire can start’
  • Keltbray rail helping students to tackle the issues engineers face on the train tracks - ‘It explains a lot, some maths, pretty good!’
  • Looking at explosive detection for chemists with DSTL – ‘fun, interesting and active’
  • Looking at how maths is used in every day life with Time and Emotion - ‘Very good – nice knowledge’
  • Looking at the chemistry of medicines, with Vulpine Science – ‘I loved learning about medicine’
  • Looking at whether warmth or cold makes insects go faster with Canterbury Christ Church University, School of Life Sciences – ‘it was new and interesting’
  • The demonstration of control of a humanoid robot using brain computer interface with Canterbury Christ Church University, Department of Computing Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity – ‘I really enjoyed learning about robots’
  • The Dreamland thrill laboratory with STEM Ambassador Neil Wilson from Dreamland - ‘Very good – well presented and well thought out’
  • The role of an Operating Department Practitioner with Canterbury Christ Church University, School of Allied and Public Health Professions - ‘Very good, it was interesting’
  • Working with technology in TV and radio with Brun Audio Consulting Ltd - ‘Exciting, it improved my knowledge a lot’
