The Kent International Jamboree 2017 got into full swing on 29th July until 5th August, at the Kent County Showground in Detling. The event welcomed a tremendous 5,000 Scouts and Guides from all across the globe. They had a fun-filled jam packed programme each day, with opportunities to get creative, competitive, and to take part in the new edition to the Jamboree – The Eureka Zone!
STEM Ambassador from The Hub of the south east of England supported this event and provided the scouts with opportunities to engage with STEM based learning in a non-school environment
Each camp were timetabled to attend the Eureka Zone for different sessions, with 500 scouts and their leaders attending each time. However for some scouts one session was not enough and there were some scouts who attended on the Wednesday morning who came again on Wednesday afternoon, where the zone was bursting with STEM enthusiasts, and some even tried to come back on the Thursday, by wearing different colour clothing so they could get in!

The Kent & Medway STEM Ambassadors ran a popular Cosmetic Chemistry activity. Scouts and Guides got the chance to make soap, lip balm and a bath bomb! Everyone got really involved and some excellent products were produced. They got to take away what they had created, and many chose to give them as presents.
The KNEX Rollercoaster used the KNEX STEM resources. This activity used team work and engineering skills to build a rollercoaster so it worked all the way around the track. This activity can be packed away and taken anywhere – into schools or the scouts and guides next meeting!
The STIXX challenge gave onlookers some amazing sights of team building, patience and perseverance. Some of the final products made were an archway, a tower, a ball catcher and a pyramid. This also used the STEM resources that can be used in STEM clubs, community groups and schools!
As a result of taking part scouts met Engineers, Scientists, Technologists and Mathematicians, they were able to find out about the world of STEM and the augmented reality glasses transported Scouts, Guides and their leaders to Peru and outer space, we can’t wait until the next one!
