Hanover Displays’ bigger customer are Stagecoach and Arriva buses operating in the South England providing LED display boards.

Project info:

To improve efficiency and improve boring/repetitive processes, Hanover Displays has been investing in automating the processes.

We make on average 30,000 bus sigs per annum and 150,000 LED boards.

LED boards are used to display passenger information system, i.e.Bus route 12X, route Brighton

To test the LED boards, we have two method: products (See Case Study) boxes cell was implemented in March 2021.

  • A Vision System (Loading/unloading of the boards is manual) for low volume
  • Dual COBOT, collaborative robot, to test the LED boards.
  • Each board has between 480 to 14,386 LEDs.
  • The entire automation process was 12 months
  • The system has been in use since February
  • COBOT dual cell tests 240 boards automatically each day
  • In the morning, all the boards to be tested are stacked on the conveyor in the
  • In the evening, tested boards are moved to stock, and signs are built
  • Faulty boards are investigated, repaired, and tested on the Vision System
  • The dual COBOT cell was implemented in February 2021 and the Vision System

At the heart of both the systems, there is an in-house designed test box which checks for electrical and thermal characteristics of the LED and both the Vision and COBOT cell have a 5MP or better camera for vision tasks to confirm that the LEDs are on/off.

We were able to test 100 boards a day using the old method.

With the COBOT, we can automatically test 240 boards a day.

With the Vision System, the most we have been able to test to-date is 340 boards.
