Colourful Energy!

Colourful Energy!

  Primary | Energy | Views: 661

Energy from the sun gives us both light and heat. The light from the sun turns into heat energy when it hits an object, or sometimes it is reflected.

Can we use these experiments to think more wisely about how we use energy?

You will Need:

  • 4 drinking glasses
  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • Thermometer
  • Ice cubes
  • Coloured card
  • Stopwatch

What to Do:

  1. Fill the glasses with the same amount of water and record the temperature at the beginning.
  2. Add 20 drops of food colouring into each glass: red, yellow, blue and none.
  3. Place the glasses in a sunny place for a set amount of time, around 15 minutes.
  4. Test the temperatures again and record your results. Did the colour make a difference to the heat energy?
  5. Place an ice cube on different coloured cards and place them all in the same sunny place.
  6. Start your timer! Find out which ice cube melts fastest/slowest. Did colour affect the heat energy?

Think about how these results might change the way you do things. What colour is best for curtains? Clothes on a warm day? Think about how we can get the most from our energy!
