Energy for Cleaner Air?

You will Need:
- 3 pieces of card
- Petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
- Cotton buds
- Tape
- Magnifying glass/Zoom on camera
What to Do:
- Label your three cards: indoor, outdoor and control.
- Using a cotton bud, smear petroleum jelly on each card.
- Tape the outdoor card on the outside of a window, the indoor card to the inside of a window.
- Place the control card in a closed place, such as a cupboard or drawer.
- Leave the cards for a set period of time, for example 24-48 hours.
- Remove the cards and focus on the petroleum jelly – have any particles been collected from the air?
- Having observed and analysed, could you repeat the experiment? Which locations would have more/less particulate pollution in the air?
Why ventilate?
This experiment justifies the need for buildings to clean their air, specifically larger buildings such as offices or school buildings. It can account for up to 60% of
energy bills. Perhaps you can think of a way to reduce this bill, or an alternative? Could you be an energy-efficient engineer?
