Joining Joints!

Joining Joints!

  Primary | Health | Views: 897

What You Need:

  • Straws
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors

What You Do:

  1. Thread a pipe cleaner through a whole straw. Try to move and bend the pipe cleaner around – is it flexible?
  2. Now, cut straws into pieces, each about 2-3cm long.
  3. Thread a pipe cleaner through the straw segments. Add enough straw segments so that they are touching.
  4. Bend the pipe cleaner and see what happens! This represents our joints – how they join rigid bones together and allow our bodies to move and bend.

How does it work?

  • A joint is where bones meet, these are represented by the straw segments in our model.
  • Some parts of our body have many joints, such as our hands and feet.
  • Other body parts have one long bone, like the single straw and pipe cleaner, such as our thigh and arm.
  • Our bodies need to have both types of bones – for stability, strength as well as flexibility and movement!
