You will need:

  • Cardboard tube from toilet paper or kitchen paper
  • A4 paper
  • Ruler
  • Tape and scissors
  • Books

What to do:

1. Roll a piece of paper around the cardboard tube and tape it to itself. Now remove the cardboard tube – the structure will be made from paper only!

2. Lay your paper tube horizontally on the table and add some books on top, one book at a time. How many can it hold before it collapses?

3. Make another tube as before. This time, place your tube vertically, standing on a flat surface.

4. Begin adding books. How many can it hold before it collapses?

Why do you think this is happening?

Does this make you want to investigate further, or do some research?
