You will Need:

  • Cardboard pizza box
  • Scissors
  • Tinfoil
  • Sellotape
  • Cling film
  • Black card
  • Newspaper
  • Ruler or wooden spoon
  • Thermometer
  • An adult to help with cutting

What to Do:

  1. Use scissors to cut a flap in the lid of the pizza box. Cut one inch from the edge of the lid, along three sides of your pizza box. Fold the flap outwards.
  2. Cover the inside of the flap with tinfoil – this way it can reflect the heat from the sun.
  3. Make a window in the box using cling film by sticking it the to open outside of the box, allowing it to be taped to the outside of the box to stop heat from escaping.
  4. Line the bottom of the box with black card to absorb the heat.
  5. Around the black card at the bottom of the box, stick rolled-up balls of newspaper. This will insulate the box and prevent heat from escaping.
  6. It’s time to cook! Think about what time is best to use your solar oven – when is the sun highest in the sky? Position your solar oven so that the sunlight is shining on the tin foil flap and onto the cling film window. Use something, like a ruler or wooden spoon, to hold the flap open.
  7. If you have a thermometer, place it inside your oven so that you can check the temperature!
  8. Now, it’s time to decide what to cook! Look up some recipes online, maybe heat up some leftovers, or make something as simple as toast!
  9. Keep an eye on your food, and when ready, carefully remove from your solar oven using something to protect your hands from the heat.
  10. Enjoy your low energy meal!

How does it work?

This solar oven is a collector, meaning it collects the energy - or heat - from the sun inside the box. The tinfoil reflects the sunlight rays and it enters the box through the clingfilm window. This heats up the air that is trapped inside the box. The black card absorbs the heat and the newspaper stops the heat from getting out of the box. This makes the inside of the box warm enough to do some cooking!
