You will Need:
- Water
- 2 large bowls
- 2 glasses
- Cling film
- Tape
- 2 small stones
- Dirt
- Salt
What to Do:
- Pour 1-2 cups of water to fill the bottom of the bowl. Add dirt to one bowl of water, and salt to the other.
- Place an empty glass in the middle of each bowl, with the bottom in the water.
- Cover each bowl in cling film and place a stone in the middle of each one, positioned over the glass.
- Place in a sunny position for 1-2 hours.
- Remove and observe the contents of the glass – has the solar energy caused any process to take place? What are the results?
How does it work?
Heat energy from the sun, or solar energy causes a process called distillation to occur. The water turns into water vapour, a gas, and then back into a liquid (condensation). The water becomes purified as it turns to a gas and leaves the dirt or salt behind.
How could this process by applied in the world? What problems could it help to solve?
