Solar Power, Hydropower, Distillation Power!

Solar Power, Hydropower, Distillation Power!

You will Need:

  • Water
  • 2 large bowls
  • 2 glasses
  • Cling film
  • Tape
  • 2 small stones
  • Dirt
  • Salt

What to Do:

  1. Pour 1-2 cups of water to fill the bottom of the bowl. Add dirt to one bowl of water, and salt to the other.
  2. Place an empty glass in the middle of each bowl, with the bottom in the water.
  3. Cover each bowl in cling film and place a stone in the middle of each one, positioned over the glass.
  4. Place in a sunny position for 1-2 hours.
  5. Remove and observe the contents of the glass – has the solar energy caused any process to take place? What are the results?

How does it work?

Heat energy from the sun, or solar energy causes a process called distillation to occur. The water turns into water vapour, a gas, and then back into a liquid (condensation). The water becomes purified as it turns to a gas and leaves the dirt or salt behind.

How could this process by applied in the world? What problems could it help to solve?
