Temperature Trick

Temperature Trick

  Secondary | Energy | Views: 822

You will Need:

  • Food colouring
  • A small container, such as the food colouring bottle
  • Water
  • Ice
  • Large, transparent container

What to Do:

  1. Place some food colouring into your smaller container.
  2. Add hot water to this and mix. Try to use water that is hot from the kettle, as the experiment will work more effectively with hotter water. However, be careful when handling hot water!
  3. In your larger container, place cold water. You may want to add ice to lower the temperature, and remove this before beginning the process.
  4. Without replacing the lid on the smaller container with the coloured water, submerge this into the large container of cold water.
  5. Observe what happens!

How does it Work?

Thermal energy causes the hot water to rise and move above the cold water.
