Types of Energy

George talks about two different types of energy:

  • Non-Renewable Energy
  • Renewable Energy

What is the difference between these two different types of energy?

Non-Renewable Energy

  • Gas is a source of non-renewable able. What are the problems with gas? Why don’t we use it much in our country?
  • Oil has similar problems to gas. Where do we get most of it from? Where do we import it from?
  • Coal is the most polluting fuel – how do we get it? Why do you think we are reducing how much we use it? Why are the coal power stations sometimes switched off?
  • Nuclear power plants are very toxic, but the fuel is more efficient. How do we get rid of nuclear waste?
  • Non-Renewable energies cause pollution and will run out one day. Can you suggest solutions to these problems? How about alternatives?

Renewable Energy

  • Windmills produce energy that is stored in batteries, converted and delivered to our homes. Have you seen these windmills on a journey? Perhaps you could do some research and make a virtual visit to a wind farm! Why is wind energy cheap?
  • Solar panels can be seen both in people’s houses, but also on solar farms.
  • Wave power is generated under the sea – can you find countries where this is used?
  • Hydro power is used in dams to make electricity – again, can you find some famous ones?
  • Geothermal energy comes from volcanoes using heat from the centre of the earth! Perhaps you could research where this is used and how it works.
  • Renewable energy is useful for three reasons – can you name them? However, what is the downside?

Engineers

It is the job of engineers to build, look after and produce energy in all of these ways.

  • Would you like to become an engineer?
