Walking Water

Walking Water

  Primary | Materials | Views: 797

You will Need:

  • Water
  • Jars or glasses
  • Food Colouring
  • Kitchen paper
  • Scissors

What to Do:

  1. Pour water in the glasses until they are around two-thirds full, add different colours of food colouring to each jar.
  2. Cut strips of kitchen paper that will fit in each jar and dip either end in a different coloured liquid.
  3. Wait and observe what is happening. Perhaps you want to make predictions? Maybe you would like to time your experiment – how long before the colours meet?

How does it work?

The coloured water travels up the fibres of the paper towel. As the paper towels absorb the coloured water, the water travels up the towel strip.

Where the primary colours meet, they turn into the secondary colours, like the blue and red making a line of purple in the video.

Send us a photo of the colours you used, did you make any colour by mixing two different colours? Send to askanambassador@canterbury.ac.uk or tag us on Twitter @STEMHUB_SE
