Working as a Coastal Detective

Working as a Coastal Detective

  Secondary | Environment | Views: 341

Hear from STEM Ambassador Dominique, a PhD Student & Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton with a working background in coastal engineering. She is currently exploring the seabed to try and understand how the surface responds to impacts from waves and tides and whether there is any link between what is going on with the seabed and the beach above. Her previous work both in local government and private consultancy involved surveying the coast for erosion and accretion as well as coastal zone management, such as designing beaches.

Hear what it is like working as a coastal detective; including how STEM skills help us understand coastal change, how to think like a coastal sleuth, and different pathways into working in this environment. Coasts are vital to our economy, environment and health and this live session will focus on both the processes and people that shape them. Dominque will provide an insight into how scientists assess coastal evolution and predict future scenarios, highlighting some of the key challenges faced by coastal managers.
