Underwater Sound

You will Need:

• Water
• Empty plastic drinks bottle
• Large tub of water, the bigger the better
• Two wooden spoons

What to Do:

1. Remove the plastic cap from the bottle.
2. Health and Safety: Ask for help from an adult to use scissors to cut the bottom off the plastic bottle as shown in video.
3. Hit the wooden spoons together in the air and observe the sound it makes.
4. Put the bottle, cut side down, into the water. Place your ear at the top of the bottle, ready to listen!
5. Ask whoever is helping you to hit the wooden spoons together, this time under the water!
6. Swap and let them try! Discuss the difference between sounds in the air and water.
7. Try this experiment in the bath or swimming pool!

Why does this happen?
