  Peter’s daily job mostly involves working on a computer, using coding (python) to analyse the data that comes through the telescopes. Working with other people, Peter discusses interesting things to do with the data the team has collected and what to find out next. The team spends time reading and writing about new discoveries, going to talks to hear about the work of other scientists and other universities, teaching students and supporting research.

  • Astrophysicists work with galaxies that are so far away, that by the time the image reaches the team, they are actually looking at galaxies from the past.
  • Lots of people think that scientists work alone in an office or lab. However, Peter spends a lot of time collaborating with his colleagues.
    
  • There are many different types of research scientists, working in all sorts of areas, including government laboratories and chemical companies.
