Held at Discovery Park on June 11, The STEM Hub organised the Great Science Share, where children displayed their science research projects. Over 300 primary school students participated in the event, which was held for the first time at the Sandwich-based science and innovation park. The event featured 15 primary schools from across East Kent and as far as Medway, making it the largest Great Science Share ever held in Kent and Medway.

The Great Science Share is an annual event which takes place on the second Tuesday in June. This national campaign is aimed at engaging young people aged 5 to 14 in asking, investigating, and sharing scientific questions that matter to them. Most importantly, it places young people at the centre of science communication, allowing them to share their discoveries with one another.

On the day, the children arrived with their groups, each having a dedicated stand to display their investigations. Every child received a stamp card to visit and engage with some of the 45 different stands during a dedicated 30-minute period. The questions explored ranged from examining pollution at their school to understanding our solar system.

James Bennett, The STEM Hub Co-ordinator said: “This stimulating event provided an experience for the children to visit the science park which is a fitting location for this type of event where many science discoveries have taken place over its 70-year history to date. For the children to share their own science research, especially to their own peers showcasing the best research and innovation, was extremely rewarding. A big thank you to the schoolteachers and the children for presenting their amazing research projects and to Discovery Park for hosting the event.”

The feedback from the pupils has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a strong desire to return for a tour of Discovery Park.
