An amazing 43 students aged between 7 and 11 years took part in an exciting day of STEM activities, giving them the opportunity to explore science in a memorable, hands-on and engaging way. The event featured a range of interactive workshops delivered by industry professionals, helping students discover how science is used in everyday life and future careers.
The day began with a fascinating Liquid Nitrogen Show, delivered by National Physical Laboratory (NPL). Students were captivated by dramatic demonstrations showcasing the effects of temperatures as low as -196°C, helping them understand scientific principles through fun and memorable experiments.
Students then took part in Bright Sparks, delivered by Pfizer. Through a series of simple experiments using balloons and a Van de Graaff generator, students explored electrostatic energy and learned about attractive and repulsive forces. The demonstrations generated plenty of excitement and curiosity as students witnessed scientific principles in action.
Students also participated in Your Super Hero Lungs, delivered by Viatris. Through a range of practical activities, students investigated how the lungs work by using peak flow meters, measuring lung capacity and exploring how inhalers help people to breathe. The session encouraged participation and helped students understand the importance of respiratory health.
Another highlight of the day was Catching the Sandwich Thief!, delivered by Asymchem. Students became forensic scientists as they investigated the mystery of a stolen sandwich. Using colour mixing and paper chromatography techniques, they analysed ink samples and compared results to identify the culprit. The activity introduced students to real scientific methods while developing observation and investigation skills.
Throughout the day, students were fully engaged and enthusiastic, embracing every opportunity to experiment, investigate and discover. The activities provided an inspiring introduction to STEM, while the support of local businesses helped bring science to life. Their enthusiasm and commitment to inspiring young people played an important role in making the day such a success.
