  You can become a highways engineer through a variety of paths:

  University

  • You can do a foundation degree or degree in civil engineering.

  College

  • You can do a HNC or HND in civil engineering before applying for a job with an engineering company.

  Apprenticeship

  • From school you can go onto a degree apprenticeship with an engineering company.

  University

  • Foundation degree: 3 A Levels, or equivalent, including a Science
  • Degree: 3 A Levels, or equivalent, including Maths and a Science

  College

  • 1 A level, or equivalent level 3 qualification. 
  • You may also need GCSE passes at grade 4 (or C) or above in Maths and Science.

  Degree Apprenticeship

  • 4 or 5 GCSEs including Maths and English to grade 4 ,or equivalent, and A Levels.

  • Have a good ability to use computers (any design software required can be learnt on the job)
