The STEM Hub celebrated Green Careers Week (6-11 November) hosting a variety of live talks throughout the week. These were delivered by STEM Ambassadors from a range of industries such as automation, engineering, neuroscience and conservation attracting around 10,500 secondary aged students throughout the week.
Green careers are a fast-growing global employment sector and Green Careers Week, now in its second year, was the perfect opportunity to engage with young people and inform them about potential career pathways that will genuinely make a difference. The talks were devised to help young minds discover various green career routes and roles that are available to them whilst educating them about the importance of changing the world for the better.
There were some interesting topics delivered from our presenters from ‘could you charge a smartphone from your brain?’ to ‘driving the future of green engineering.’
It would not be possible to offer these informative talks without the support of our fantastic STEM Ambassadors who use their enthusiasm and commitment to encourage young people to enjoy STEM subjects. They open the doors to a world of opportunities and possibilities which come from pursuing STEM subjects and careers.
Mark, Associate Professor in Cellular Neuroscience at the University of Reading said: “It’s always great to speak to young people about the human brain, taking time to make neuroscience accessible to different age groups is something of a challenge but equally rewarding. I hope the students are inspired to learn more about their brains and think positively about STEM careers whatever their background.”

It was exciting to talk about the current opportunities and challenges of the automotive industry and technological solutions. I am grateful to be working at McLaren, where we strive to innovate and excel at what we do and welcome others that do the same,” remarked Anushka, Graduate Engineer, Powertrain Systems/McLaren Automotive Ltd.
