Park Community School, a coeducational community secondary school in Havant, Hampshire was delighted to be supported by The STEM Hub Central South & South East as part of Engineering UK’s Big Bang at Schools programme, aimed at young people aged 11-14 years to run a space themed event on 20 July 2023.

It was an amazing day of STEM for an entire year group. Around 220 Year 7 students had the opportunity to experience space related activities including an interactive talk from Airbus, global pioneers in the aerospace industry. Students could take on the challenge to build a Mars rover and a lunar lander, try their hand at rocket launching, make a pinhole camera and engage in interactive science from a mobile laboratory in a lorry!

The sessions were delivered alongside the school’s partners, Airbus, Winchester College and the University of Kingston. Feedback from pupils and partners was overwhelmingly positive with requests to run the day again.

The day was supported by some of the school’s STEM Ambassadors, consisting of Year 9 STEM girls who did brilliantly helping with the sessions.

Event Lead and Science Teacher, Ms L Gregory said: “I definitely think the event helped pupils understand more about STEM and routes into careers. There have been lots of questions and enquiries about apprenticeships and how to get into engineering. Particularly from girls."

In addition, students were nominated to win a trip to Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium in the Autumn term. The competition was fierce, and it was really hard for teachers to pick the winners.

Park Community School was grateful to everyone who helped make the event a huge success and is looking forward to next year and seeing how this year group take their interest and passion from the day forward into their learning.
