Stone Lodge School, a co-educational, non-selective secondary school in Dartford, Kent was thrilled to be supported by The STEM Hub Central South & South East as part of Engineering UK’s Big Bang at Schools programme, aimed at young people aged 11-14 years to run a space themed morning event on 26 June 2023.

The event included four 45-minute shows in a pop-up planetarium showcased by Starlight STEM Limited. STEM Ambassador, Dr Gallaway spoke to half of the school’s Year 7 students about astrophysics. The students acquired information about the Sun in great detail, aurora, the Earth, the Moon, the Solar System including all eight planets, comets, dwarf planets and asteroid plus some of the major moons before moving out to the Milky Way and the Super Massive Black Hole in its core! The groups also looked at how the International Space Station (ISS) operated, and learnt about different female astronauts including Helen Sharman, at aged just 27, became the first British astronaut to travel into space in 1991.

Event Lead and Head of DT and Engineering Technology, Ms C George said: “The students loved the whole experience. Our aim for the event was to promote STEM to under-represented groups. It was rewarding to see so many female students getting excited about science."

Stone Lodge School was grateful to everyone who helped make the event a huge success.
