On Tuesday 11 July, 90 Year 9 students from The Abbey School, Faversham undertook a cosmetic chemistry day. Kent & Medway STEM and STEM Ambassadors worked with students in supporting them through the day and demonstrating how to make cosmetics from scratch.

The aim of the day was for each group of five to create a business selling; bath bombs, soap or lip balms. They were briefed on the costs of packaging, marketing and materials.
In the morning session, students had the opportunity to understand and know how to create each of lip balm, soap and bath bombs. Then they had a session in marketing, finance and advertising to develop the skills to develop their own business for this challenge and to use in future careers.

At the end of the day, each group had to pitch their cosmetic products and business plan to a panel of judges; ‘Dragons Den’ style where some STEM Ambassadors was on the judging panel.

Some of the student’s feedback included:

• It was really good
• Was something different and I loved it
• I would do it over again
• Learning was good but in a fun way.
• I can apply and relate Science to lots of other jobs.

Some of the teacher’s feedback:

• It was a brilliant day, I would like to do this activity next year
• I have never seen students so quiet and paying attention to what each group was presenting, after working so hard all day; it is the best activity day.
• It was one of the best days organised. The students loved it and had a great day learning.
• I enjoyed working with the students and seeing a different side to them, it was competitive and was something different, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
• It was a delight to see the students enjoying the day and were so engrossed in it. They loved every bit of the day.

Overall it was a very successful day with a huge amount of colourful, creative bath bombs, soaps and lip balms created and everyone worked very well together.
