Burgess Hill, West Sussex – 19-23 June

The STEM Hub was delighted to be part of the final day of the Burgess Hill Mid Sussex Science Week (MSSW) on Friday 23 June. We have been engaging with this annual event for the past 8 years inspiring primary aged children to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

This year MSSW consists of two events in the Mid Sussex towns of Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath for surrounding area Primary Schools. The event is supported by a STEM Ambassador from a local STEM business that is partnered with a local primary school to visit and set a theme generally relating to their area of expertise or business. During the weeks the STEM Ambassador visits the school to support the teachers and students in completing a project to showcase at the end of the week to a panel of judges.

There was such a variety of excellent projects on display from cyber security to wind turbines and the judges had an extremely tough time selecting the winners. Sheddingdean Community Primary School were declared the winners for their pneumatic powered vehicles and close behind Bolney CE Primary School were runners-up for the second consecutive year and produced working models of a vacuum cleaner.

The winners and runners-up were presented with their trophy and certificates by Mims Davies MP for Mid Sussex.

The second week of MSSW for Haywards Heath based schools will be taking place 3-7 July and we look forward to visiting to see more wonderful STEM projects and find out who the winners will be.
