STEM at Work

Ten schools from all over the Kent and Medway area had groups attending the full day event at the Canterbury campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. They each participated in six presentations/workshops out of a total eleven available and given by some of our valued STEM Ambassadors.

Everyone gathered initially to listen to Dr Andrew Szydlo’s amazing ‘As if by Magic’ show - watching the ‘mad professor’ create chemical tricks, fire and bangs (big bangs).

The specialisms the other Ambassadors shared with the students afterwards ranged from creating glow sticks to showing how they filmed Formula One races; investigating the chemistry of medicines to making ice cream without a freezer and guessing the jobs of the STEM ambassadors and using ‘Makey Makey’ to create connections.

Some comments from the teachers:

  • “It was a shame we could not visit all the activities as some others looked very interesting“.
  • “Thank you for a really enjoyable day“.
  • “Andrew Szydlo was fantastic“.
  • “It would be nice to do all the activities! - Maybe a longer day?”

Some comments from the students:

  • “Fun and interactive”
  • “I liked the truck designing”
  • “Interesting with cool facts”
  • “Very interesting learnt a lot”
